Opinion: Charles Booker noose ad is a big miss

Lashaun Turner

Black Kentucky Democrat trying to unseat Senator Rand Paul wears a self-applied noose in political ad.

-Charles Booker-:Lashaun Turner--:

Booker released a campaign video on June 1, 2022, in which he appeared wearing a noose.

This video is one of the hardest things I have done, but I know it is something I have a responsibility to do. The power behind a movement is the ability to tell a story that captures hearts, open minds, inspire, and challenge us to mobilize. This story is mine as well as many Kentuckians, who have struggled with structural racism and inequity. As the first Black Kentuckian to receive the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate, I have a responsibility to represent hard working Kentuckians from the forgotten places by replacing the old, racist Southern Strategy with a new one that lifts love and unity over hate and division. - Charles Booker

In the video Booker takes aim directly at Senator Rand Paul saying Paul is:

"The very person who compared expanded health care to slavery. The person who said he would have opposed The Civil Rights Act. The person who single-handedly blocked an anti-lynching act from being federal law." -Charles Booker

Many of his statements are without context. For one example as CNN reported Senator Paul did hold up a previous version of anti-lynching legislation, only to co-sign new legislation that was signed into law. President Biden signed the Emmett Till Anti-lynching Act in March of this year.

Charles Booker Noose Video Reactions

While some praise the in your face brashness of the video others are more critical:

This is such a powerful message, unsettling and true. -Facebook User
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!! This is EXACTLY what Democrats must do to save our republic! And it is the absolute truth! Dems are often too "polite" - we cannot keep bringing knives to a gun fight so to speak. Our democracy is literally at stake -Facebook User
This video would have been powerful in 1960’s but the purpose for this is to anger folks and get people to vote Democrat,. -Facebook User
- A smear campaign full of lies against Rand Paul is one thing but, digging up the past with this type of despicable “shock value” rhetoric has no place in politics and further divides us. This causes more anger and division. It needs to stop so we can all move forward.- Facebook User

Opinion: In watching the video as a Black American, it felt performative, disconnected, and desperate. Surely, we must never forget the “Pain of our Past” which is what the video advertisement is titled. Whether intentional or not, Booker’s imagery seems sure to stoke negative emotions, division, and hate.

It is a sad use of theatrics and the exploitation of the pain our ancestors experienced as Booker tries to use that horrible history to propel his personal political goals in 2022.

It would serve this politician well to run on his politics and policies for current day issues affecting his constituents.

I don’t know if it is the Jussie Smollett effect or what but this man wearing a self-applied noose for attention is a big miss in my opinion.
