Jussie Smollett has been sentenced to 30 months of felony probation and ordered to pay restitution of more than $120,000 and a $25,000 fine plus spend 150 days in jail.
In January of 2019, Smollett filed a report with the Chicago Police Department which stated that he had gone out for food at around 2 AM when masked men wearing MAGA hats shouted racist and homophobic slurs at him before beating him up.
Smollett who is black and gay also said his attackers poured what he believed was bleach over him and put a noose around his neck.
His lawyer had professed “ Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify. He was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgement,”.
In the courtroom prior to sentencing Smollett continued to deny he had made false reports, stating:
“If I did this, then it means that I stuck my fist in the fears of Black Americans in this country for over 400 years and the fears of the LGBT community, “Your Honor, I respect you and I respect the jury but I did not do this. And I am not suicidal. And if anything happens to me when I go in there, I did not do it to myself. And you must all know that.”
Smollett was remanded immediately into custody to start serving his sentence.
