The I.E Soul Food Tour made a stop in Lake Elsinore recently to dine at Felix’s BBQ with Soul.
The Restaurant
At Felix’s BBQ with Soul, it’s a confluence of Cajun and ‘que, gumbos and fried chicken, collard greens and red beans — a tasty mix, served at breakfast, lunch and dinner. -Felix's BBQ with Soul
The Experience
The vibe inside the restaurant is very welcoming and charming. There is a large dining room with tables and chairs. There is also a separate bar area.
The establishment appeared neat and clean. The soulful sounds of Al Green and others played harmoniously in the background at just the right volume.
Felix’s has an entertaining yet laid back feel. Unlike the abundance of counter-kitchen eateries I've visited, at Felix's I felt like I was in a down home southern-style full-service restaurant, with a comfortable dining environment that elevated the whole experience.
The Food
I ordered the sampler which came with 4 meats and 4 sides for $35. I tasted the baby back ribs, Alabama fried chicken tenders, chicken wings plus fried shrimp.
The sides were macaroni and cheese, collard greens, candied yams, and potato salad. The food was served hot and the presentation was appealing.
The cornbread muffins served while waiting for the food to come out was a definite highlight. The best cornbread I’ve tasted on the tour so far. Fresh, moist, served warm with butter. Not too sweet-not cake-like.
The collard greens and the cornbread together were hands down the best I’ve tasted to date.
The BBQ had good flavor with the meat adhering to the bone. The Alabama fried chicken tenders were very good- crisp for the most part and the seasoning was on point.
The wings looked light golden brown but were rubbery and the least enjoyable part of the meal. The shrimp were huge, properly cooked, and tasted okay.
The sides were tasty with the greens as the standout and the mac n cheese in the top 3 that I’ve tasted so far. The candied yams were among the best I’ve tasted so far also.
Impression and EATER score
The good food combined with the ambiance and friendly customer service makes this a great choice for soul food in the Inland Empire. EATER score of 8.5/10 for this meal and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to others.
Of note, Felix’s BBQ with Soul has 4 locations in Southern California, -Oceanside, Carlsbad, San Marcos, and the one covered in this article-123 N Main St, Lake Elsinore, CA 92530.
