Olivia's Mexican Restaurant
According to Olivia’s website, the owners started out in 1976 with food trucks that did very well. This led to a store and then eventually the opening of the restaurant
Tony Cabral's love of good food and dream of owning his own restaurant was realized after his marriage to Olivia Luis. His journey began in the bi-centennial year 1976. In 1978, he realized his dream and opened a restaurant in Riverside, California, naming it "Olivia's" after his wife- Olivia's Mexican Restaurant
The eatery describes itself as a popular spot for creative Mexican fare including shrimp burritos plus classic desserts such as flan.
The Experience
I chose to sit on the patio in front and enjoyed the space and scenery of busy Magnolia Street at about 6:30 in the evening. The atmosphere was cozy and pleasant.
Staff were helpful and knowledgeable about the menu offering great recommendations.
The Food
I ordered the 2-enchilada combo plate with one cheese and one chicken enchilada, rice, and beans. Chips and salsa for starters. I also sampled the chicken fajitas.
I thought the enchilada plate was pretty good. The red sauce was highly recommended by the server/waitress, and I did think it was worthy.
The only issue I had with that part of the meal was the food was barely warm in spots for some reason.
However, it was just warm enough for me to eat it without having to send it back for a re-heat.
The chicken fajitas were good, and the chicken was well cooked and seasoned. The tortillas were home made from my understanding, and I really enjoyed the quality and texture of them.
The salsa is also made on the premise and was very fresh and flavorful. A bit hot for my tastebuds but good quality and tasty.
Olivia's makes it's own tortilla chips also but I was disappointed that the chips were cold, dry & hard. I prefer to have a fresh out the oven or fryer warm crisp chip to dip in the cool salsa.
Dessert
I was also able to sample their fried ice cream dessert and the apple fried burrito. The fried burrito was beautifully presented and was a great close to the meal.
Impression and EATER score
This cozy restaurant left a good impression with excellent & friendly customer service, and good food in general. The menu is plentiful with authentic Mexican cuisine.
The EATER score of my selections were 8/10 and I would recommend you give them a try.
