If you are looking to explore and experience outdoor recreation and adventure, this installment of 'Trip Chic' introduces you to a scenic hiking location right in the heart of southwest Riverside county.
About Walker Canyon
Walker Canyon is situated in the Temescal Mountains located near Lake Elsinore. The canyon is within driving distance from Orange and San Diego counties which makes for a great day trip.
In recent years, 2019 specifically, the canyon became popularized and heavily trafficked by tourists coming from all over to see the rare “Super Bloom” phenomenon.
Unusually high rainfall in the preceding months had led to the canyon and hillsides exploding with color as a Super Bloom of poppies covered more than 1,600 acres in the area.
Walker Canyon Trail is about 9.2 miles, well defined, and can be heavily trafficked at times. The trail is popular with hikers, runners, nature lovers, and bird watchers alike.
The trail is great for visitors of all skill levels and normally sees its highest use from mid-March through October. Best times during the summer months are dawn and dusk to avoid excessive heat.
What Should You Bring?
Make sure when you go that you are prepared. Dress appropriately and be ready for any inclement weather and unexpectant conditions you may face.
You will want to wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes of course. And definitely bring plenty of water to drink.
You should also be prepared in case of small emergencies or encounters with bugs and wildlife. Please be aware that rattlesnakes are common in this area.
Bring a backpack to carry things like your cell phone, and a small first aid kit. Don’t forget to bring a few snacks too.
Even if you are not able to visit during a “Super Bloom” season there is still plenty of wildlife, plants, and nature to enjoy along the way.
Just take it all in and enjoy what is sure to be an invigorating walk, scenic views and vistas. Please remember to stay on the trails to avoid damaging the surrounding sensitive habitat.
