The Fourth of July marks the end of the popular East Dallas bar, the OT Tavern. Dallas News reports that the bar received countless complaints about gun violence around the area. The bar will its last drinks on July 4.
The city of Dallas filed a suit against the landlords of the buildings that housed the OT Tavern on June 17, 2022. Dallas News reports that the suit alleges the area near 3606 Greenville Avenue is a serious danger to customers, employees and residents living nearby. The suit alleges that the landlords are not taking the measures necessary to mitigate crime.
Dallas News reports that multiple gunfire incidents have occurred including a shooting that left Cameron Ray dead last March and the wounding of two women in June. The area has also been the scene of cases of aggravated assault, sexual assault and criminal mischief. OT Tavern has not publicly commented on the incidents leading to their closure. However, Bar 3606, which is neighbors with OT Tavern, told Dallas News they have no plans to close.
Bar 3606 has metal detectors, and off-duty police for security and claims to have mainly law-abiding clientele. However, the public including local officials has protested the bar's liquor license, which expires this month. Bar 3606 told Dallas News that their staff has been doing everything possible to make sure patrons and their neighbors are kept safe. While some want the bars closed, others just want a better police presence. OT Tavern has not actually posted publicly its July 5th closure.
