Which Florida Hospitals Earn An A-Rating For Safety In The Fall of 2023? Which Earn A D-Rating?

Thinking about a hospital stay at one of Florida's 325 hospitals isn't something that most people want to do. However, if you need a hospital, you undoubtedly want the safest available - as it's your health at play.

For 20 years, the nonprofit organization the LeapFrog group has collected, analyzed, and published data on the safety of America's hospitals.

This article will look at the criteria considered and how Florida's hospitals fared.

What Leapfrog Considered in Its Evaluation: Leapfrog evaluated nearly 3,000 acute-care hospitals across the nation. Leapfrog evaluates criteria such as infections, falls and trauma, preventable complications, hygiene policies, staffing, and safe medication administration, to name just a few examples of the 22 different criteria that are considered.

Overall Findings: Nationally, Leapfrog found that hospitals had fewer infection issues than during the pandemic. Unfortunately, patient feedback wasn't as positive and showed a decline.

Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said in a statement:

“Now that we have pre- and post-pandemic data for patient safety measures, we are encouraged by the improvement in infections and applaud hospitals for reversing the disturbing infection spike we saw during the pandemic. However, there’s still more work to be done. It’s deeply concerning that patient reports about their health care experience continue to decline.”

A "C" rating was the most common grade given nationally (at 39%) versus the 30% of hospitals that received an "A."

How Did Florida Fare?: Florida actually landed in the top 10 states for safety, coming in at number 9, with 38% of Florida's hospitals earning an "A" and beating the national average.

Specifically, 70 of Florida's hospitals earned an "A," 39 earned a "B," 63 earned a "C," 12 earned a "D," and there were no "F" rankings.

The Florida Hospital Grades: Here is a list of the Florida hospitals evaluated with their grades. For the convenience of readers, they are listed in alphabetical order under each grade. One Florida hospital was not ranked. It is noted at the end of the article. Obviously, hospitals receiving an A are the highest-rated.
