Florida's "Most Affordable" Place To Live Has Also Been Called Its Most "Unhealthy"

L. Cane

Some Floridians may tell you that there is nowhere in Florida that is considered to be "affordable" anymore. After all, inflation in some areas of Florida has seen some of the highest rates in the nation.

Between inflation, rising housing costs, and homeowners insurance that is higher than the national average, some Floridians wouldn't call the current conditions "affordable."

However, the real estate website Redfin has recently identified what it says is the most "affordable" city in the Sunshine State. Interestingly enough, this city has been called the most "unhealthy" in the state by another website. Let's have a look:

The "Affordability" Of Ocala: The city of Ocala is located in the central part of the state, not far from Gainesville. It is known as "horse country" and for Silver Springs.

Redfin noted that a home in Ocala only averages $274,900 and a one-bedroom apartment runs just under $1,200. The average median income in Ocala is $46,841, per Redfin. The home price, under $275,000, is significantly lower than the state's average of almost $403,000.

Additional "Affordable" Cities: Floridians may be interested in the other cities that Redfin identified as affordable as of September of 2023.

They were, in order of most to least affordable: Gainesville, Pine Hills, Daytona Beach, Poinciana, Port Charlotte, Deltona, Lakeland, Spring Hill, and Melbourne. None of these markets had median home values that were above $335,000.

Why Ocala Was Named Florida's Most "Unhealthy" City: In August of 2023, 24/7 Tempo identified the most unhealthy cities in each state by looking at factors such as smoking and the percentage of people who reported being in fair or poor health, to name a few of the criteria.

Ocala ranked poorly because it had a high obesity rate (at over 38%) and a smoking rate of over 20%. Additionally, almost 18% of Ocala residents reported being in fair or poor health.

What Floridians Think About Living in Ocala: Those who live in Ocala give it 4 out of 5 stars on Niche. Many enjoy its small-town feel and describe it as a quiet place with friendly neighbors. Some lament development that makes the city feel a bit more crowded.

Here is a sample of a positive review:

"Ocala is a family-based, equestrian town with almost everything you need. We have plenty of shops, activities, and medical care within the area. We also have a private airport and an international airport close by. There are an abundance of gas stations and car washes. However,...would like to see...more family activities, such as a water park, skating rink, and some have even suggested a zoo. Overall, Ocala has great qualities for every family."
