35-year-old Shaun White does not appear to be sitting at home and taking it easy during his retirement.
Although White announced he would retire from competitive snowboarding at the end of the Olympics in Beijing, he hasn't exactly been resting.
White Already Had Interests Outside of Snowboarding:
Shaun already had a habit of staying busy. When training, he practiced a year-round regimen of snowboarding in winter and skating and surfing in the summer.
And even if White has more downtime post-Olympics, he has interests outside of snowboarding. White has a men’s clothing line (WHT Space), he owns a stake in Mammoth Resorts (a California ski resort company,) and he recently launched an active lifestyle brand called whitespace.
White Says He's Finding His Retirement "Very Enjoyable:"
White told People Magazine that his last run at the Olympics felt "very heavy" because all of the other competitors were honoring him. However, White also said that "now I'm just kind of in the glow of it all, it's been great. Very enjoyable."
White Attended the Super Bowl and Has Been Making Lists About His Future:
Sometimes, when a person begins a new chapter of their life, it helps to get clear on one's goals and desires. White appears to be doing just that.
"My girlfriend said, 'If you're retiring, you gotta make this list of things you wanna do. So, I'm putting this list [together], and pretty close to the top of the list was, 'Go to a Super Bowl,' because it's always during the competitive season — I've never been to one. So I landed, said hi to everyone, and then I'm like, 'I gotta go,' and went straight to the Super Bowl."
White Has Recently Learned Some Important Life Lessons from His Physical Therapist, Who Has Cancer:
Ester Lee is a physical therapist based out of Los Angeles who has worked extensively with White for seven years. She lives with him when he's training for the Olympics, and the two have bceome very close.
In 2020, Lee was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
White has spoken about how Lee's diagnosis put things in perspective for him and taught him that some things are more important than medals. He told NBC:
"More than any Olympics, these sports, or any of the other stuff. To have her with me right now, it's everything. Because I didn't really think that I was going to have her with me."
White's Future May Include Nina Dobrev:
Shawn has reportedly been dating actress Nina Dobrev since 2019.
White told People (The TV Show):
"She's incredible and kind of came into my life at this really interesting time. I mean, what a change I'm going through, and to have her support through it all...And she's so encouraging and so supportive. And I think this whole Olympic run wouldn't have been the same without her, so I feel very lucky to have her with me."
For her part, Dobrev has expressed her pride in White on Instagram:
It sounds like White has much to look forward to in his retirement.
