5 Steps to Declutter a Room

You’ve lost your favorite shirt again. You have no idea where it is. Of course, you need it right now. There are so many piles in your home, it could be anywhere. You are frustrated and aggravated. There’s nothing worse than not being able to find something you need. There’s nothing more stressful than a house filled with clutter.

In fact, your home is so cluttered, it’s become overwhelming. Last year at tax time you raced around the house trying to find your documents. You wasted hours going through piles of papers and couldn’t find it. You swore to yourself you would never go through another time like that again. Next year you would be organized. Everything would be in its place. Yet you messed up again. The clutter is now stressing you out. 

You want to clean up the clutter in your home, but you don’t know where to begin. Here are some ideas to get you started. Put on some lively music, if it helps to get you moving. 

  1. Get out a trash bag. 

Go get a trash bag and bring it into the room you are in. Spend a few minutes walking around stuffing it with anything you want to throw away. Grab any papers that need to be shredded too.

If you have any broken items that you’ve been wanting to fix for years but haven’t, you may want to toss them too. Unless you’re going to fix an item right away, there’s no point in holding on to the item. 

After a few minutes of this, your room will look a lot better.

Remember: When you leave piles of papers out, unwashed dishes, piles of clothing, or trash in a room, it automatically makes your home look disorganized and cluttered. It’s important to get into a daily routine to eliminate them.

2. Use a basket to declutter.

Go into the room with a basket, and put anything that doesn’t belong in that room into the basket. When you are finished with the room, put the items away in their proper places. You’d be surprised at how many times we bring an item into a room and forget to put it away. This greatly adds to clutter.

Everything you keep in your home should have a place where it belongs. Just the simple act of returning the item to its proper place will rid your home of clutter. And you will feel amazing, knowing exactly where you put something. There’s nothing more awesome than looking for a set of keys, and finding them exactly where you always hang them up.

3. Use a box to give away things.

Look around the room and check for anything in that room that you don’t want anymore, but don’t want to throw away. You can put it in the box to give away or sell. Don’t keep anything that you don’t love in your home. Someone else might treasure the item that meant nothing to you. You could help someone in need with an item you didn’t think twice about. 

You won’t wear most of the clothes you have. A shirt you haven’t worn for months could be the perfect shirt for someone else. Gather clothing you don’t want to donate to someone who needs it. There are so many needy people that would be grateful to wear your used clothing. Why keep it in a closet and never wear it when you can help someone else?

3. Organize the items in the room that remain.

Group items in the room together. Put all the books on a shelf. Arrange your collections together for display. Group pictures on the wall. By grouping the items, it will be easier to find things. 

Clear off the flat surfaces in the room and put things you want to keep in drawers. Move furniture around to make the room look better. 

4. Once your room looks the way you want, get out a vacuum cleaner, broom and mop, and furniture polish and spend some time cleaning the room. Now you will have a great place to relax. 

5. Start with another room in your home. Even if you do one room a day, your home will always look great and you won’t be embarrassed when family or friends drop by to visit.
