There is nothing quite like stepping into a book store. Being surrounded by countless stories. The smell of the books. The slower pace of sitting down and getting lost in a great book. Thankfully, there are some fantastic indie bookstores right here in St. Louis. Here are three of my favorites.

Left Bank Books

Left Bank Books is located on N Euclid Ave in a charming brick building. And they are the oldest and largest independently-owned full-line bookstore in St. Louis. Left Bank offers a full-line of new and used books, toys, gifts and more. One of my favorite things here is the "Blind date with a book" section, where you can take a wrapped book (for a donation) and unwrap it after "purchase." What a clever idea! I can't recommend this store highly enough.

I am definitely a bookworm. Although I am a fairly slow reader, I have always loved buying new books for my collection. Finding the latest books is easy at big box booksellers, but there's something so charming about the friendly, curated feel of a locally owned bookstore. And Left Bank definitely gives you that vibe. The really nice thing about Left Bank, and why I patronized them today, is that you can obtain books from so many local authors! They do such a great job of supporting writers right here in the St. Louis region. Jason P.

The Book House

This store has been open since 1985 and is located in in a charming historic Victorian house built in 1865. The store is about 15 minutes from downtown St. Louis and has a variety of rare, out of print, new, and used books are tucked into nine rooms. There are three floors of winding staircases filled with nooks and crannies. There is even a bargain basement too. One word of warning to anyone who is allergic to cats: they have two cats here. But if you're not allergic to cats, you'll love this store.

What a fun store! A book lovers dream. Books are everywhere! We just stopped in for a minute but left spending $70. I didn't even look to see if the books I picked out were new or old. Next time I will to save a few $. And of course I didn't see these Yelp specials, I Will definitely take advantage of those next time. Friendly staff. Most likely they will have a book you haven't read. Angela C.

Dunaway Books

Dunaway Books is an great stop for book lovers on the "Grand" South Grand strip. The store is located inside a gallery and carries a wide selection of used, out of print and rare volumes. There is something here for everyone. Whether you have a few hours or just a few minutes to get away, Dunaway Books is the perfect stop for anyone who is looking for something new to enjoy. Seriously, you can spend hours here without trying!

This place is a treasure trove of used, rare books. I spent some time walking around just marveling at the amount of books, but I was there to find something specific: a textbook for an upcoming class. It was super helpful that their website offers a database you can search before even arriving, which is how I knew they had the book I needed. The man working behind the register walked me to the section I needed and it was fun digging through the books to find my prize. Best part: the textbook that normally goes for $180 was $5 when I rung up. But even if you're not looking for something specific, I highly recommend browsing. It's a huge, awesome space with all sorts of unique books! Sara U.
