7 Things You Can Do Today To Make Yourself Happier

The phrase “happiness is an inside job” has been around for a while. Indeed, happiness doesn't come from outside sources, but it can be hard to find the time and space in our everyday lives to do what brings us joy.

When was the last time you did something for yourself? I'm not talking about a spa day or picking up your favorite takeout, but actually doing something that makes you happy. Something that fulfills some deep need inside of you. Do you ever feel like everything is going wrong in your life? You’re too hard on yourself, and it’s time to take a step back. You can do many things today, or any day for that matter, to make yourself happy.

Many people are unhappy for many reasons, and they don't know how to change that. It's not always easy when the world is against you, but it can be done with some simple steps.

1. Find something that brings you joy

The first step is to find something that brings you joy. You may have found this blog because you're looking for a way out of your misery, or maybe someone sent this article in an email to help cheer up a friend who has been feeling down lately.

You would think that the happiest people in the world are those with never-ending supplies of money, power, and fame. But it's not always true. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Busy schedules, commitments, work deadlines can leave you feeling overwhelmed. But what if we could all find something that brings us joy? Find something small yet significant enough to help make yourself feel happier.

2. Smile

The next thing you should do today is smile. When you smile, your body releases endorphins and serotonin that make you feel happy. Next, list three things in your life that are going well or remind you of a time when you were delighted. This will help shift the focus away from what isn't working and onto what is working for you right now, which can be enough to lift your mood.

3. Take a walk outside

The weather is getting warmer, and we all know what that means. It's time to get out of the house and enjoy the fresh air! I'm not talking about going outside for a quick 15 minutes, but really taking your time and exploring new places in your own city or town.

You can even make it a goal this year to explore every street in your area by setting up Google Maps on your phone, so you have an idea of where you're going before you set off on foot. There's nothing better than feeling free as a bird, having fun with friends, and just enjoying life.

4. Drink water and eat healthy food

Everyone deserves to be happy. And if you’re not feeling your best, it cannot be easy to find happiness in the little things. One of the easiest ways to make yourself feel happier is by making healthier decisions with what you eat and drink. You deserve a life that makes you feel good on the inside, as well as on the outside.

Do you ever feel like your mood is determined by the food you eat or how much water you drink? Well, it turns out there's some truth to this idea. When we are dehydrated, our brain can't function as well and may negatively affect our mood. Besides, when we consume junk foods or sugary drinks, it causes an insulin spike, making us feel sluggish and tired.

5. Spend time with loved ones

Spending time with loved ones is a great way to make yourself happy. It can be as simple as spending a day at the park or going for dinner and drinks. Being around people who you care about will always put a smile on your face, no matter what life throws at you.

We are all guilty of spending time with ourselves more than we spend time with loved ones. For many of us, the last person we want to talk to is our significant other or kids. There is rarely a conversation in which someone isn't on their phone checking Facebook, Instagram, or email.

It's been a rough week, and you're home alone. Do you know what would really make you happy? Spending time with someone who loves you. So call that person up, invite them over, or go to their house.

6. Read a book or magazine you enjoy

Reading is an activity that has been proven to make you happier. The keyword here is "reading". This means reading a book or magazine for pleasure. Reading anything else, such as academic textbooks, can be good for your brain but it won't necessarily make you happier. There are many benefits of reading and the most important one of all? It makes us happy.

For some people, reading is a way to escape from the stresses of life. For others, it’s a form of self-care and an enjoyable pastime. Whether you are looking for something educational or want to relax with a good book, many books can make you feel happy and uplifted when escaping reality.

7. Write down three things that made you happy today

I woke up with a smile on my face today. I'm not sure what it is, but for some reason, every morning when I wake up, I feel happy and ready to take on the day. It's like everything that happened yesterday has gone away, and all the things that are going to happen tomorrow don't exist yet, so for just a few seconds before my eyes open fully and reality sets in again, life is perfect.

After writing down what made me happy yesterday, I realized how important those things are in life and have decided to start prioritizing them again.
