One of the most important aspects of being mentally tough is having a strong sense of self and understanding what you value most in life. While many people confuse this with ego, it’s actually quite different.

Ego refers to the personality traits that make you unique and individual, whereas values give meaning to your life. Whether you want to be successful in sports or business, understanding who you really are will help develop an identity that supports whatever goals you have for yourself.

It’s important to become self-aware if you want to develop mental toughness. One feeds into the other, and they work to support each other.

Self-awareness starts with identifying the values and goals that are important to you. By identifying what you want in life, you can make a list of goals that are aligned with those values.

When you have goals and understand why they are important, you develop a strong sense of purpose. When you have a sense of purpose, it is easier to develop the self-discipline and mental toughness needed to accomplish those goals because you clearly see what is at stake.

People often complain that setting goals can feel like a waste of time because they never achieve them. But research has shown that the process of writing down your intentions and putting them out into the universe helps you to achieve results faster than if you hadn’t set the goal in the first place.

If you approach goal-setting with a negative mindset, one that views it as something burdensome or arduous, then achieving goals becomes difficult, if not impossible.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you get clear on your goals and values:

  1. What do you want?
  2. How can I get there?
  3. What do I value?
  4. Why does this matter to me?

Make a habit of writing down your goals

Goals are important to your overall success. They act as a guiding force; without them, it is easy for us to become lost and distracted by other things in our lives.

However, many people set goals but do not write them down on paper or have the written version easily accessible. Without this accountability factor, you may lose motivation once the goal has been achieved or lose sight of what you were trying to achieve at all!

Goal setting is not an easy task for many people because they don’t know how to set effective goals. They often set broad and vague goals, which only leads to frustration when the target date comes around and they have yet to achieve their specific targets.

Achieving and maintaining a positive mindset is challenging no matter what. Without goals, it can feel like you are just wandering in the dark without a compass or any sense of direction. That's why it is so important to write down your goals each day to keep you on track with your journey toward success.

Make your goals specific

Setting goals is important because it helps provide a clearer vision for the future. You probably have many things you want to do, but most people don't actually succeed in achieving their goals. Sometimes they are vague or too hard to reach, or even unattainable.

To ensure success, it’s best to set specific goals with a definite deadline, which is realistically achievable.

For example, instead of setting a goal to lose weight (which is vague), you can lose 10 pounds in 60 days. This goal has a specific outcome, a timeframe for completion, and most importantly, it’s realistic.

Keep your purpose in mind

When setting and writing out your goals, keeping the overarching purpose in mind is also important. Setting a goal to lose weight is fine, but reminding yourself why this goal is important daily will help keep you motivated.

Many people set goals every year but fail to achieve them. It is important to keep your purpose in mind when setting goals. For you to achieve a goal that you need to stay focused and motivated.

You won't find the key to success overnight, but you can start with a simple question: Why do you want what you want?

People have ambition, drive, and passion for different things. It is important to keep your purpose in mind when you feel that motivation drifting away from you will help you stay motivated.

Create an action plan

To actually get started, you need to create an action plan. "But I don't know what I'm going to do!" That's fine! Just make a list of all the things that have been weighing on your mind lately and put them in order from most important to least important. Then go down the list and take care of one item at a time until they're all done!

Once you know what you are trying to accomplish and the time frame you are working with, break the goal down into small steps that you can complete each day. The more specific you are with your goals, the more likely you will achieve them and develop mental strength and confidence in the process.

You have to make a plan. So, you know what you want to do next. That's an accomplishment in itself! Make sure that your action plan is specific and measurable; it will motivate you.

If one week isn't enough for something, break it down into smaller goals or steps that can be accomplished within the same time frame. For example: "I'm going to write 10 pages of my book" becomes “I’m going to spend 15 minutes each day writing 1 page.
