The creation and acceptance of fashion

In more complex societies, leisure time can produce a sense of boredom, which makes people fall into restlessness and curiosity. It motivates them to escape their standard life and to add the attractiveness of the self and to all other objects of love and friendship. The person's ego is constantly being accused of helplessness precisely in the functionally powerful societies. This leads to an unconscious tendency to throw back on personal individuality. The endless rediscovery of the self may turn into an obsession and destroy the individual. That is why insensitive people, anxious to be in the fashion, usually overreach themselves and nullify the purpose of fashion.

Some people use fashion as a visual emblem to prove that they are a member of a particular group they belong to. The more vulgar desire for prestige or notoriety is different from the affirmation of the libidinal self. It is important to understand that the role of imitation of fashion by people who belong to different groups separated from those who set the fashion trend. The acceptance of a trend by all members of society bridges the gap between a social class and the next class above it. A new fashion becomes psychologically necessary, and thus the fashion cycle is immortal. Fashion is the discreet solution of the subtle conflict.

In the modern world, the tone giving power has largely slipped away from the aristocracy of rank to the aristocracy of wealth which lies back of fashion. This suggests a psychological leveling of classes, if not economic, because it feels that wealth is an accidental quality compared to blood. In an aristocracy of wealth everyone, even the poorest, is potentially wealthy. Therefore, all individuals are equally entitled so far as their pockets permit of fashion. Such behavior may cheapens its value and cause fashion trends to shift rapidly. And the insistence on expensive materials can become the hallmark of wealthy vulgarity, while fashion is a matter of form and symbol, not of material value.

To the average people, fashion is the challenge of taste and suggestions for reconciliation. In most cases, with little demure, people embrace fashion and not so much reconcile it with taste, but substitute it. They have been chronically distressed to discover how fast the closet becomes outmoded. They complain bitterly and ridicule the new fashion every time. Eventually, they surrender, and become victims of behavior they can not fully comprehend.

The direction of fashion depends on the prevailing culture and social ideals of the time. Fashion always catches quickly any powerful psychological drifts under the apparently placid surface of culture. For example, there is an unacknowledged drift toward class distinctions in a democratic society, and, thus, fashion will endlessly give it visible forms. If there is criticism, there is an insincere justification that fashion is just fashion and does not need to be taken seriously. There is a strong impatience towards the outward forms of modesty in a puritanic society, so fashion serves well to the demands of sex curiosity as well. There was destined to be a shortening of women's skirts after they had become long enough. Thus, sex symbolism is the real factor that governs human behavior. In general, people do not wish to be modest, they always strive to be expressive, or as immodest-as fear allows them.

In modern civilization, women's fashions show greater variability than men's fashions. In addition to changing women's fashion more frequently and more completely, women have a broader variety of forms than men. The men's look remains basically the same for about 100 years with only a little modification. However, in the past centuries, men's fashions showed more exuberance than women’s.

Historically, women were classified as female only because they were defined as social and economic classes. She pleases by being what she is and looking as she does rather than by doing what she does. It is important to clarify whether biology or history is mainly responsible for this. In marriage, a woman has always been the kept partner, and she has had to prove her desirability and attractiveness through constant fashion experiments. Among the wealthier classes and those trying to imitate wealth, women have been seen as a luxury privilege on whom one would spend extravagantly. Thus, she symbolizes her husband's social and economic status. With the increasingly marked change of woman's place in nowadays society, the factors that drive women's fashions can be changed, however, the factor of sex symbolism will be remained as basic.

It should be taken in great consideration that many people speak of fashions in art, habits of living and morals. Fashion is mainly applied to clothing and human body exhibitions, but it has nothing to do with clothing or decoration in essence. It has symbolic significance. Thought, morality, or art can psychologically be equivalent to the ego costume. Certainly, one can make investments in pewter or the latest Parisian fashions in the same spirit in which one can be transformed to Catholicism or Christian Science. However, beliefs and attitudes are not fashion, not clothing or accessories. For example, in modern society, it is not a fashion for men to wear pants, it is a custom. Fashion suggests specific variations of trousers, such as length, width, or color. Likewise, whilst adherence to a religious faith is not in itself a fashion, when the individual feels he could easily pass from one belief to another, out of his personal choice, not because of his need for choice but because of a desire to acquire symbols of status, the change of mind as a change of mode becomes legitimate to say.
