The owners of a specialty food shop in the heart of Peoria, Illinois recently made the difficult decision to close the business after serving sweet treats to the community for over 100 years.
Jane Scott, owner of the Nut House at 311 Main Street in Peoria, recently decided to close up shop. The local specialty store, famous for serving a variety of nuts, candies, ice cream, and gourmet popcorn, has been a staple of Peoria for nearly 100 years.
Friday, May 27, 2022, is the last day the Nut House will be open to the public.
Scott explained to local reporters that the location in downtown Peoria wasn't getting enough customers due to a lack of foot traffic in the area. "There just isn't a retail presence downtown," she said.
However, according to the shop's Facebook page, Scott plans to continue selling the store's beloved glazed nuts and candies at farmer's markets, local stores, and festivals. The shop will also continue selling food products online through its website at www.thenuthousepeoria.com.
Scott also runs a sister store called Jane's Sweet Addictions which is located on the lower level of the Northwoods Mall. That store will continue to operate and offer a fresh selection of items daily.
According to local reports, the Nut House was previously located a block down from its current location. However, a fire in 1987 forced the shop to move up the street after the building was damaged.
This piece of Peoria history will surely be missed in the community.
