EAST NEW YORK, Brooklyn -

The Daily Beast reports, while speaking to detectives after her March arrest for allegedly killing and dismembering a friend, 83-year-old Harvey Marcelin made a disturbing joke nearly as gross as the crime of which she’s been accused. “You have to be careful about Chinese food because you never know what you’re going to be eating,” Marcelin said to a detective. “You may be eating the victim.” The Daily Beast reported. Marcelin made the remarks while discussing various types of cuisine in New York, though it’s unclear how the topic even came up in her discussions with law enforcement. The disturbing joke was revealed in a document prosecutors turned over to the defense Wednesday.

At her Wednesday arraignment, Marcelin’s attorney Andrew Friedman entered the plea on his client’s behalf during the brief hearing in Brooklyn Supreme Court. "My client maintains her innocence,” Friedman told Justice Danny Chun. Marcelin pleaded not guilty to killing and dismembering her 68-year-old friend Susan Leydon. Marcelin has been indicted on charges of first and second-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and concealment of a human corpse after Leydon’s dismembered body parts were found around Brooklyn earlier this month, The Daily Beast reported.

Prosecutors allege that Marcelin discarded a black shopping bag containing Leyden’s torso later that week. She was also captured on video lugging around a severed leg wrapped in plastic in her motorized wheelchair, police said. The victim’s head and other limbs were discovered in Marcelin’s apartment, along with splattered blood, cleaning supplies, a hammer and the box for an electric saw, prosecutors said. Police found one of Leyden’s legs near a garbage can about three blocks from Marcelin’s home on March 7, 2022. Marcelin has spent more than 50 years in state prison for two past killings. Marcelin was previously convicted for the murder of previous girlfriends in 1963 and then again in 1984, New York Post reported.

Marcelin shot and killed her live-in girlfriend, Jacqueline Bonds, inside the couple’s Manhattan apartment in April 1963, and fatally stabbed another live-in girlfriend in 1985 — stuffing her body into a bag dumped near Central Park, The New York Post reports.

The accused serial killer faces life in prison without the possibility of parole if she is convicted of Leyden’s murder, reported by New York Post.
