Kimberly Ritter

City Plants, a Los Angeles based non-profit, is working with community groups, residents, and businesses to coordinate tree planting and care throughout Los Angeles. Their mission is to grow a greener future for Los Angeles by engaging Angelenos to plant and care for trees throughout the city. If you own property in Los Angeles and are able to water and care for the trees once they are planted, you may qualify to have free trees planted.

City Plants is a continuation of LA’s former tree planting program, Million Trees LA. Their current name reflects their changing priorities, which are to focus efforts in low canopy areas and to plant in a way that maximizes the benefits trees provide rather than on reaching a specific number of trees. They plant and distribute 20,000 trees a year in the Los Angeles area and to transform streets and neighborhoods.

City Plants offers free shade trees to plant in your yard, on private property, and in your parkway, that strip between the sidewalk and the street. If you live or own property in the City of LA, you are eligible to receive free trees from City Plants.

Interested home and business owners can sign up online and verify that they live in the city of Los Angeles. For renters, it is recommended to notify your landlord or property owner before submitting your application for a free street tree.

Free Yard Tree Program in Los Angeles
If you live in the City of Los Angeles, you can receive free trees to plant in your yard! Planting trees in your yard is an easy way to save energy and cool your home. City Plants will supply you with up to seven free, water-efficient shade trees and deliver them straight to your door, along with stakes, ties, and fertilizer pellets to get your trees started off right. L.A. residents can learn more and apply here.

Free Street Trees Program in Los Angeles
Are you lacking street trees in front of your home or business? Sign up today and City Plants will take care of the whole City process of permitting and planting your street trees for you. All you have to do is water them. Find out more information and apply here.

If you qualify and if there is space for a tree, City Plants will send out an inspector and certified arborist to select the best location and tree species to plant in your parkway. They follow the City of Los Angeles’ street tree planting guidelines. Their main goal is to plant the right tree in the right place.

Once your tree is planted, you will be responsible for the watering and care for your trees. It will need water for the first 3-5 years while its roots grow into the ground. You will receive instructions on how to water your trees properly by email and at your door. A good rule of thumb is to check it every week to see if the soil is dry, and if so, slowly add at least 10 gallons of water once a week.
