Last week, a large fire destroyed a home in the 4300 block of Stonebridge Court in the Ironwood subdivision. Since then, one of the home's occupants, 50-year-old Jose Javier Andrade, had not been seen or heard from since about 7 hours before the fire. While police were not treating the disappearance as suspicious, they were concerned for his safety and named Andrade as a missing person.

Yesterday, those concerns proved to be founded when human remains were discovered in the rubble that had fallen into the basement of the fire-ravaged home. The identity of the remains has not been confirmed. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire and the identity of the remains.

At around 2 am on May 26, firefighters were called to the home as it was engulfed in flames. It took them several hours to put out the fire and when they did, they found that the brick home had become very unstable, with limited ability to safely search for the missing occupant.

Later that day, CFD called in a contractor to demolish the home so investigators could safely search for Andrade. After searching for hours, firefighters were unable to determine whether Andrade had perished in the fire. The remains were discovered in the basement after the crew returned to the site on May 31 to continue removing the debris.

After the discovery, firefighters worked with the Champaign County Coroner's Office to remove the remains while preserving as much evidence as possible. The coroner's office will work to determine the cause and manner of death, as well as the identity of the deceased.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing. Anyone with information about the fire or Andrade's whereabouts is asked to call Champaign Police.
