(Forsyth County, GA) Forsyth County families will soon be able to visit a new museum at the Cumming City Center. Cumming Mayor Troy Brumbalow said he hopes to officially open the Cumming Fire Museum to the public by the end of July.
The free museum, located between the coming-soon Myth & Legend coffee shop and Avenue of the Oaks, is a tribute to the area’s firefighting history. There will be memorabilia from the old Cumming Fire Department before Forsyth County took over firefighting responsibilities, educational displays about the department’s history, and even the city’s last fire truck from the 1980s, which was restored to its former glory by Cumming Streets Department member Daylon Gravitt.
Visitors will be able to access the museum through Myth & Legend, but on nice days the plan is to open the garage door to the museum so the truck is easy to see, just like at one of the county’s 15 fire stations.
Another important aspect of the museum will be a memorial tribute to Forsyth County’s fallen firefighters. Forsyth County Fire Chief Barry Head will be donating some special memorabilia to help honor these heroes.
“Barry and I will be hanging most of the memorabilia ourselves,” said Cumming Mayor Troy Brumbalow. “It’s really a labor of love for the both of us.”
Brumbalow also shared that the city’s veteran’s memorial will be moving to the City Center and that there are plans for a memorial to fallen police officers when the new Cumming Police Department building is ready.
For Brumbalow, having these memorials be a part of the growing City Center made perfect sense.
“We wanted to create a place where the community could come together, and I think we’ve accomplished that,” he said.
