IRONMAN Wisconsin is returning to the Madison area this coming Sunday. There'll be plenty of spots for spectators to watch the competition and cheer athletes on. For the swim portion, racers will take to Lake Monona early in the morning.

The biking portion starts at Monona Terrace and makes its way past the Alliant Energy Center before taking riders on a loop out through rural Dane county, heading as far afield as Mt. Horeb.

Riders return to the downtown core area for the running portion, covering everywhere from Observatory Drive to a lap around the football field at Camp Randall ahead of a final push to the finish line on the steps of the capitol building.

Of course, that also means there will be plenty of another thing: street closures.

In Madison, several thoroughfares are part of the route map and will be affected. City officials plan to have the following closures in place Sunday for the biking section of the race. These closures begin at 7:30 am and stay in effect until approximately 5:30 pm:

  • The right lane of northbound John Nolen Drive from E. Lakeside St to Monona Terrace
  • East Lakeside Street east of John Nolen Drive
  • Olin-Turville Court
  • East Rusk Avenue from Alliant Energy Center driveway to Rimrock Road
  • Rimrock Road ramps to/from Beltline Highway
  • Badger Road west of Rimrock Road

Several other roads will be closed from 11 am through midnight for the running portion of the race.

A complete list is available on the course website. Maison Metro Busses will also have multiple detours.
