The city of Fort Lauderdale just recently lost over $1 million to a phishing scam, and police are trying to figure out how it happened. According to an article published by Yahoo News, the city of Fort Lauderdale made a $1.2 million payment on Thursday, September 14, 2023, to "Moss Construction", "believing it to be a legitimate bill".
However, it turns out that the bill was fraudulent. Greg Chavarria, the city manager, explained how this mistake may have happened saying, "The scammer filled out the paperwork and had a blank check attached. Accounts Payable checked the names and they matched corporate records".
Chavarria added that the city is working diligently to recoup the money, "but it will take at least a week to get back".
