The state of North Carolina is nationally known for having a plethora of beautiful beaches - some of the most beautiful beaches in America. However, according to one national publication, NC is also home to one of the "deadliest" beaches in the nation! In this article, we will take a look at which national publication made the claim, which beach made the list, as well as a few other beaches that made the list as well!

On January 27, 2023, travellens.com published an article titled, "America's Deadliest Beaches". The publication wanted to make it clear what the main purpose of their article was. "We wanted to find out which beaches are more deadly than others, so we looked into several factors such as fatalities, to discover which beaches in the US present the biggest dangers to visitors", the publication wrote. The publication also noted that beaches present several dangers including hurricanes, surfing fatalities, or shark attacks". Although Florida dominated to top 10 list with seven cities, the one town in NC that made the list was - Oak Island!

The top 10 included Fort Lauderdale, Floridat at #10, Gulf Shores, Alabama at #9, Oak Island at #8, Jacksonville Beach, Florida at #7, Melbourne Beach, Florida at #6, Myrtle Beach, SC at #5, Panama City Beach, Florida at #4, Ormond Beach, Florida at #3, Cocoa Beach, Florida at #2, and coming in at #1 - New Smyrna Beach, Florida!

It is safe to say that Oak Island Town officials did not agree wtih the beach town being on the list, and noted that travellens.com found it convenient not to mention the "roughly a half a million beachgoers" who visited Oak Island and returened home safely, in a statement they made to McClatchy News.
