Very few people that live outside of South Carolina have heard of Hemingway. It is a small town with a population of approximately 522 people, according to the 2020 Census. Although the town of Hemingway is best known for its history in cotton and farming - the town also has a BBQ restaurant that many consider being some of the best in America. Some even think it is the best in the country.
According to their website, thescottsbbq.com, "Scott's Bar-B-Que" was founded in 1972 by Ella and Roosevelt "Rosie" Scott in Hemingway, SC after moving from Philadelphia, PA that same year. The two ran several successful businesses including a gas station, a variety store, and a farm. Rosie's uncle taught him a technique of slow cooking whole hogs over a wood-burning pit, a technique that keeps hungry customers coming back for more BBQ all the time.
When the Scotts opened up shop in Hemingway, the town could not get enough of their BBQ. Word quickly got around outside of the small town, and all of a sudden people were coming from all over the state of South Carolina and beyond to see what all of the hype was about. It is safe to say that those customers were not disappointed.
The Scotts have one son, Rodney Scott. Today, many know Rodney as one of the best if not the best pitmasters in the world. Rodney has been featured in the Washington Post, Esquire magazine, Netflix, and was named the "Best Chef: Southeast" by the James Beard Foundation, only the second pitmaster to win a James Beard chef award, according to his Wikipedia. Rodney slow-cooked his first whole hog when he was just 11 years old and has not looked back since.
Scott's Bar-B-Cue serves pulled pork, smoked BBQ chicken (whole and half), half and whole pit-cooked BBQ hogs, and a plethora of sides. It is recommended to call ahead of time as all of those items sell out extremely fast. The establishment is open Thursday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 8:30 pm.
