There are so many breath-taking buildings and places to visit in San Antonio, from Hotel Havana to San Antonio Riverwalk to San Fernando de Bexar Cathedral. The city has so much to offer and tall buildings are definitely one of them!
San Antonio has 93 high-rise buildings. The first skyscraper in San Antonio was constructed in 1928 and it was first called the "Smith-Young Tower", after which it became the Tower Life Building. However, it has been surpassed by 4 other skyscrapers that are now touching the sky above San Antonio.
So what are the 5 tallest buildings in San Antonio? Let's find out!
Tower of the Americas
The first place belongs to the Tower of the Americas, which is an observation tower in Downtown San Antonio. It's 750 feet tall (that's 229 meters) and it was designed by an architect called O'Neil Ford.
It was built in 1968 and it was actually a theme structure for the HemisFair '68, which was a World's Fair in San Antonio in 1968. Its theme was "The Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas" and according to Wikipedia, it celebrated "the many nations which settled the region."
Tower of the Americas is the 30th tallest building in Texas and on top, you can dine in a restaurant that slowly rotates! It gives a beautiful view of San Antonio and it's a wonderful dining experience.
It's located in the Hemisfair district in Downtown San Antonio. It's the tallest building so you definitely can't miss it.
San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter
San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter is a hotel that's 546 feet tall (that's 166 meters) and it's the second tallest building in San Antonio. It has 38 floors.
The construction of the building was completed in 1988. The hotel was designed by RTKL Associates. It's located next to the famous San Antonio Riverwalk and it offers a great view of the Rivercenter lagoon.
The third place belongs to the Weston Centre, which is a 444 feet tall (that's 135 metres) building with 32 floors. It's an office building, which makes it different from the Marriott Rivercenter as well as the Tower of the Americas, and therefore it's the tallest office building in all of San Antonio.
Weston Centre used to be called "NBC Bank Plaza" and it's located right next to the San Antonio Riverwalk, specifically at 112 East Pecan Street in Downtown San Antonio.
Grand Hyatt San Antonio
Just like the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter, Grand Hyatt San Antonio is a hotel. This makes it the second tallest hotel in the whole city, and it's also apparently the tallest building in San Antonio that was constructed in the 2000s.
The building is 424 feet tall (that's 129 meters), and it was designed by Arquitectonica and Kell Munoz Architects. It has 34 floors and 1003 hotel rooms (sounds like a magic number if you ask me). It was built in 2008.
The hotel is located at 600 E Market Street in San Antonio.
Tower Life Building
Tower Life Building closes the list, which is the first skyscraper ever constructed in San Antonio as I mentioned at the beginning of the article. It was built in 1928 and it's 404 feet tall (that's 123 meters). It has 31 floors.
Tower Life Building was designed by Ayres & Ayres (Atlee & Robert M. Ayres) and it's currently owned by Tower Life Insurance Company, which is what it's named after at the moment. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It's located at 310 S St Mary's Street in Downtown San Antonio.
These are the 5 tallest buildings in San Antonio. Why not go and have a look? Even skyscrapers have a certain beauty to them if you know where to look. Personally, the Tower Life Building is beautiful.
However, always make sure to stay safe and healthy on your walk.
