Tragedy can strike anyone at any time. We are all at the mercy of the 'elements' of nature. Yet there appear to be those who seem to be that much more susceptible to nature's sleight of hand. While most of us experience misfortune, few and far in between, others seem to get more than their fair share.
During my childhood, I had a friend who we will call Angel. When I came to know her, she lived with her grandmother as she had already lost her mother to death. The grandmother was fairly kind, but not especially affectionate.
Angel was about two years older than I was, but we were related by marriage and we hit it off immediately. We became good friends.
After we entered middle school, Angel's grandmother could no longer afford to keep her, so she went off to live with her father, who was still alive. At the age of 14 years, she needed surgery for an infected appendix. While she was recuperating from the surgery, though doctors and nurses gave her express information that it was not time to eat solid foods so soon after the operation, it was reported that Angel asked someone and received a meal that she ate.
She began to experience many post-surgical complications and died within a few days.
Whether Angel died as a result of eating, due to the surgical procedure itself, or as a result of a post-surgical infection, it was such a sad time as I have always felt she never got a chance to live life at all. It appears she was born under such unfortunate circumstances. Her mother died when she was a baby, then living with a grandmother who really did not want her to have surgery so young and be dead before her 15th birthday.
Whenever I think of her, I feel sad for her and I hope that wherever she is, she is happy.
