(Forsyth County, GA) The Historical Society of Cumming/Forsyth County is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the historic Cumming Public School on Saturday, September 9.

Cumming Public School was built in 1923 and was in operation as a school until 1974. In 1999, ownership of the school was transferred from the Forsyth County Board of Education to the City of Cumming and the school was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000 with the help of the Historical Society.

Over the next few years, the school underwent restoration and a historic marker was dedicated in 2006.

Today, it is home to the Historical Society of Cumming/Forsyth County, the School Street Playhouse and Tam’s Backstage Food & Spirits.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 9 there will be live music, food trucks and art from the Sawnee Association of the Arts/Cumming Arts Center at the Cumming Public School.

Commemorative T-shirts are also available for sale. Jimmy McConnell, co-president of the Historical Society, said the shirts will be black and feature the school emblem and the date.

The T-shirts are $15 and must be ordered before Monday, August 28.

Tam’s Backstage is also celebrating the school’s 100th anniversary along with its own 18th anniversary at its annual benefit dinner on Monday, August 28. Proceeds will go towards supporting Forsyth Community Clinic and the Forsyth County Community Foundation.

FoCo Sheriff's Office arrests 3 suspected international crime ring members

(Forsyth County, GA) The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) arrested three suspects believed to be involved in an international theft ring. Maykel Hernandez, Giorge Navea and Javier Guerra-Morales were arrested in connection to several burglaries. They are all being charged with burglary - smash and grab and criminal damage to property. "This is another excellent example of good police work and even better detective work by our Property Crimes Unit,” said Sheriff Ron Freeman. “We are steadfast in our pursuit of these South American Theft Groups and these criminals are quickly learning, South America is where they should have stayed. If they are on U.S. soil, FCSO will spare no expense or effort and will recognize no boundary in pursuing and arresting them. Endanger our citizens and you will quickly find out who FCSO and Forsyth County are." Public Information Officer Stacie Miller said deputies were called to Simon D. Jewelers on Peachtree Parkway last December after its alarm went off and found signs of forced entry through the roof. Miller said nothing was taken due to the quick response of the deputies and the business’ security system. The FCSO believed the attempted burglary was the work of a theft group from South America or similar groups who were involved in a string of burglaries targeting homes and businesses around metro Atlanta and in over a dozen other states. The three suspects in custody are also suspects in burglaries and attempted burglaries in Marietta, Canton, Alpharetta and Knoxville, TN.
