(Forsyth County, GA) Two plots of land containing former landfills in the City of Cumming might soon be available for purchase.

During a special called meeting on Thursday, March 23 by the Downtown Development Authority of Cumming, members voted to take the first steps needed in order to put the two former landfills located on Kelly Mill Road and the Buford Dam Road up for sale.

The Kelly Mill Road landfill was given to the City of Cumming by Forsyth County in the early 1980s and is used to store pipes for the Water & Sewer Department today.

The Buford Dam Road landfill, which is about 4.5 acres, was recently given to the DDA during the City Council Work Session meeting on March 7 in order to make a possible sale easier.

City Attorney Kevin Tallant said the sales would benefit all parties involved.

“The benefit to everybody is that when you sell this property, not only do you generate revenue for the city, you generate taxes for the county because this property then would no longer be owned by the city,” Tallant said. “It will be owned by somebody who's going to have to pay property taxes on it.”

The Kelly Mill Road landfill is appraised at $980,000 while the Buford Dam Road landfill is appraised at $280,000.

Tallant said there are no offers for the land yet, and that the vote would just allow them to take the next steps in selling the properties.

The DDA voted in favor of authorizing the pursuit of selling the two properties.
