(Forsyth County, GA) After 25 years, the City of Cumming Recreation and Parks Department will be getting a new department director.

Director Greg Little first started working at the department in 1985 as the athletic director before taking on the role as the department director in 1998.

Several expansions to the department were made under his leadership, including the opening of the Dobbs Creek Recreation Center in 2001, the Cumming Aquatic Center in 2011 and the new Office and Programming Building in 2016.

“But I feel the department's biggest accomplishment has been that of providing quality recreation opportunities for the community over the past 20 plus years,” Little said.

He announced his retirement in January and said that he is “completely at peace” with his decision, especially after being in the department for so long.

“I want to thank the City of Cumming for the opportunity to serve that long and for all of the support the Recreation Department received during that time,” Little said. “And I especially want to thank my 'work family' at the Recreation Department, now and through the years, for all their dedication and friendship.”

Jeremy Howell, the assistant aquatics director of the Cumming Aquatic Center, will be taking over for Little as the Recreation and Parks Department director.

Similar to Little, Howell has been part of the department for several decades, playing recreational basketball with the department as a 7 year old. At 16, he worked as a lifeguard and was involved with the department throughout high school and college.

He became the aquatics coordinator/assistant athletic coordinator in 2005 before becoming the assistant aquatics director in 2011.

He expressed his excitement at the new position and looks forward to working with the mayor and city council to continue providing the city with a quality Recreation and Parks Department.

“The City Administration and the Recreation and Parks staff have been very helpful and supportive in my transition,” Howell said. “Some of the staff that I worked with when I was a lifeguard at 16 years old are still working for the Department which also makes the transition easier.”

Concerning the future of the department, he wants to expand the programs to include volleyball, indoor tennis and pickleball. He would also like to see both kids and adults get more involved in fitness, dance and art classes.

“We have a state of the art facility that houses these activities and we want to grow these classes and add new classes such as photography, music lessons, and one on one physical training,” Howell said. “I am truly blessed to be in this position and I really look forward to continue providing quality programs in a safe, fun, and positive atmosphere.”
