(Forsyth County, GA) The Martin Marietta rock quarry is opening its doors again for the 12th annual Boulder Dash 5k/10k Race on Saturday, April 23 at 8 a.m.

The Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce partnered with Northside Hospital Forsyth and Martin Marietta Materials to put on the event, which allows participants of all ages to run through the Martin Marietta rock quarry in Cumming.

Michelle Daniels, the vice president of business development at the chamber, said the participants are the only people to gain access to the quarry for the entire year, which is usually closed to the public.

“Boulder Dash is Georgia’s most unique race experience as participants are able to walk/run through an active rock quarry,” Daniels said. “The course changes every year and this year will be one to not miss as the views of the quarry this year are magnificent!”

Runners will be greeted at the finish line with a “DINO-MITE” finisher medal and the Martin Marietta Spring Fling, a festival with live music, vendors and food. They will also receive a T-shirt, customized race bib and can check their results online after the race.

Runners can also participate virtually by registering and submitting their results online. They can receive their medal and T-shirt at a drop off location that will be decided closer to the race.

Despite the pandemic, Daniels said they had about 800 runners from all over the state last year, as well as from 13 other states. She said they are expecting 1000 runners this year, including many companies taking part in a corporate challenge.

“This is a great event for team-building,” Daniels said. “To get out and explore a part of Forsyth County you normally can’t see, and have a ton of fun on a beautiful spring day. This race is for all ages and participants will experience a fun-filled Spring Fling event once they cross the finish line.
