1. Madison

Total Population: 49, 327

Last Year's Rank: 4 (Up 3)

Median Home Value: $253,000 (10th best)

Unemployment Rate: 3.8% (30th best)

Madison is our best city in Alabama, and it's our first foray outside the Birmingham area. Madison is a suburb of Huntsville, so it has a lower cost of living than the top three cities on this list, making it a budget-friendly choice. Madison may have a lower median home price, but its median household income is still the fourth highest in Alabama at $98,188 annually. In addition, Huntsville is a rapidly growing economic hub, which means your entertainment choices are a lot more varied.

2. Mountain Brook

Total Population: 20,436

Last Year's Rank: 1 (Down 1)

Median Home Value: $628,800 (best)

Unemployment Rate: 1.7% (3rd best)

We will begin with a city as excellent as Mountain Brook, which happens to rank in the top 5 statewide for just about every category that we measured. At 1.7% unemployment and 3.0% poverty, Mountain Brook's economy is as solid as it gets, with Alabama's lowest unemployment and poverty, respectively. Also, there is very little to be concerned about criminal activity, as Mountain Brook ranks 90th in the state for the least crime rates. Finally, even though Mountain Brook has the highest health insurance rates in Alabama at 98.4%, if you encounter an unfortunate situation, you'll be just fine.

3. Homewood

Total Population: 25,534

Last Year's Rank: 3 (No Change)

Median Home Value: $347,800 (3rd best)

Unemployment Rate: 2.7% (9th best)

A suburb of Mountain Brook, Homewood is 25,534 located between Vestavia Hills and Mountain Brook. We'll be covering the youngest town in our league, Homewood, with its median age of 30. Homewood is one of the best cities in Alabama for singles for that reason. Having great things to do around is crucial, such as hiking in nearby Red Mountain Park.

Vestavia Hills is another Birmingham suburb that has topped this list several times. There's no need to worry about Amazon porch pirates here because it's one of the safest places in Alabama. Also, Vestavia Hills public schools have an average ranking of 9/10 from GreatSchools, meaning they're a good choice for families moving here with children. In addition, the Birmingham Zoo is only a few minutes away, so there's always something to do when people visit from out of town.

5. Fairhope

Total Population: 21,083

Last Year's Rank: 5 (No Change)

Median Home Value: $299,200 (5th best)

Unemployment Rate: 4.6% (4best)

You might want to make sure you find a job paying $75,197/year before packing your bags, however; Fairhope ranks amongst

the most expensive cities in Alabama.
