Jersey City is the seat of Hudson County in New Jersey and is the second-most populated city of the state. Its population as of 2021 is 258,523, with a land area of 14.74 square miles and 6.39 square miles of water. Part of the New York metropolitan region, Jersey City, is limited on the east by the Hudson River and Upper New York Bay and west by the Hackensack River and Newark Bay. Redevelopment of the Jersey City waterfront has made the city probably the most significant focal point of banking and account in the United States. It has created the city's nickname Wall Street West.

Jersey City used to be home to the Lenape tribe. In 1609, Henry Hudson, looking for a backup way to go to East Asia, docked at Sandy Hook, Harsimus Cove, and Weehawken Cove, and somewhere else along what was subsequently named the North River. The city was a manufacturing town and served to be so for the 19th and 20th centuries. Nowadays, Jersey City's economy is composed primarily of a local work community with more than 100,000 private and public area occupations. Examples are Wall Street West, with jobs in banking and popular retail areas such as Newport Mall that provides retail job opportunities.
