In 1875, St. Petersburg was purchased by John C. Williams, who co-founded it. A popular legend said that a coin toss between Williams and Peter Demens would determine who would name the city. Since Demens won, the town became St. Petersburg. 1903 saw the full incorporation of St. Petersburg as a city. Today its Gateway area is a notable economic hub.
