Founded in 1664, Elizabeth was originally called Elizabethtown. They named it after the wife of Sir George Carteret, a proprietor of the Colony of New Jersey. It suffered severely during the American Revolution with continued attacks by British forces and therefore many monuments can be found there.
Elizabeth has a lot to offer to all, history fans, nature lovers, shopaholics and foodies. The historic sites of this 350 years old city are endless, from Boxwood Hall to Bonnell House, as well as Liberty Hall Museum and Elizabeth Public library. Ritz Theater and Performing Art Center - with 2700 seats, this performing arts center can host concerts, operas, comedies, conferences and weddings. It was built in 1926 and a lot of influential names have performed on this stage such as Ray Charles, Maya Angelou, Chaka Khan, Marx Brothers and more.
Warinanco Park - Watch the cherries blossom in spring or have fun at the skating rink in winter. This park offers something year round. It is near the Elizabeth River and includes a lake and a boathouse. You can rent a boat or visit the beautiful gardens. This 205 acre park includes a snack bar and a coffee shop.
Boxwood Hall State Historic Site - this was the home to Elias Boudinot, a founding father, now turned museum. It represents a historic landmark built in 1750 where you can find artifacts and learn a lot about Elizabeth’s history.
No matter what season you are visiting, Elizabeth has a rich cultural life. Elizabeth Portugal Day Parade is something you would not want to miss if you are here in the summer. It is a tradition going back 40 years and involves fishing competitions, soccer and golf tournaments, art exhibitions, pageants and more. Every year in Elizabeth, an annual historic reenactment takes place to celebrate this town’s heritage and history. It is a family-friendly event that draws hundreds of visitors.
