I love movies. As a film fan, I have a lot of favorites. I love movies that are different and genre bending, movies that push the limits of what we expect from a film. I like to share these movie recommendations with you because I think they are great movies that you should see. Here are some of my favorite movies that play in New York that you should see.
The Boy & The World
I was so excited to see this movie. It stars Ethan Hawke, the great actress and singer Chloë Sevigny, the amazing Rachel Weisz, and the wonderful Kiefer Sutherland. It is a deep, poetic and complex film about love and relationships. You will be taken to the middle of the human experience. It is beautiful and touching. Do you see what I mean about the cinema that pushes boundaries? There are so many things that make this movie special. The script is awesome, the cinematography is wonderful, the acting is brilliant, and the story is thought provoking. I love the movie that Rachel Weisz and Ethan Hawke wrote together, it is a thoughtful, insightful, romantic, and thought provoking movie.
Produced by Darren Aronofsky, this is a film about a man who has to take care of his sister when his brother has to go into prison. They have a rocky relationship and they use this brother and sister relationship as a distraction from a darker truth. The Exorcist A brilliant horror film, based on a terrifying true story, starring Linda Blair and Max von Sydow. A young girl moves into an apartment with her mother, who happens to be possessed by demons. On the Waterfront You will never believe this movie, which came out in 1956, about a group of dock workers who decide to take down their corrupt boss. The Godfather An amazing movie that every movie lover should watch at least once. The Godfather is a powerful and insightful story about family and the ties that bind us.
The Assassination of Richard Nixon
This is a brilliant docudrama about the Watergate scandal. Do yourself a favor and see this movie. The Big Sick I saw this film a couple of months ago and I loved it. Kumail Nanjiani plays a white woman who falls in love with his Pakistani friend. It is a beautiful, funny, romantic story about finding love. Woman on the Run The Lava Tree Trilogy is one of the best indie film trilogies ever made. The first movie is about a woman, whom we follow for a full year. The second film is about the second half of her year. The third film is about how she handles her new life. These movies really show how to overcome your fears and life circumstances.
Lost in Translation
Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson star in this underrated romantic comedy. I have seen this at least a dozen times. I actually wanted to reenact the scene where Bill Murray wakes up in the middle of the night and serenades Scarlett Johansson while they eat breakfast together. So that I could give you guys a taste of this gem. This movie is so good and it really makes me appreciate how great Bill Murray is. Let Me In This is one of my favorite horror movies of the year. I love this creepy film. The plot follows a young boy who is adopted by a pair of vampires. His life is soon turned upside down when the girl he falls in love with is turned into a vampire. This is an extremely suspenseful movie that leaves you guessing right until the very end.
This Is Not a Film I first saw this movie when it played at the Rio Theater in Los Angeles. The special effects in this movie are fantastic. The way the movie is edited is flawless and the cinematography is masterful. It was directed by Brian Crano and it was written by Crano, Andrew Gurland and Charles Mondry. It stars John Cusack and James Franco and it also stars Dylan Baker and Chloë Sevigny. You can watch this movie on Netflix, if you can’t wait. I would definitely recommend it, as you will not be disappointed. Shock and Awe The reviews for this movie were terrible. I really do not know why. I give this movie 5 stars, but only because it does not really have a clear message. There is no one the likeable, that is for sure.
