A few months back, I enjoyed an Indian Curry dish from a local bistro. The dish consisted of Curried Chickpeas, Rice, and Naan. While it was a delicious dish, it was not an authentic dish. Therefore, I quickly craved the dish authentically.

Over the next few weeks, I looked into local Indian restaurants that sold the dish and based on reviews, decided to try Kohinoor Indian Restaurant and Lounge for the first time.

Kohinoor Indian Restaurant and Lounge, 6 E Columbia Ave, Champaign

Kohinoor Indian Restaurant and Lounge is located at 6 East Columbia Ave. in Champaign. It is an Indian eatery featuring tandoori fare & vegetarian dishes in a modest, earth-toned setting. When you arrive, you’ll notice the option for outdoor seating, as well as indoor dining depending on your preferences.

When I walked in to pick up my order, I quickly noticed the award for being rated #1 in Champaign for best (Indian & middle Eastern food) in town. After seeing that, I felt as if I had made the right decision.

In fact, you can check out the restaurant on Facebook and you’ll see that they were recently awarded again this year for being the best Indian & Middle Eastern restaurant in Champaign-Urbana. For four years in a row, they have won this award.

Authentic Chana Masala Served with Basmati Rice or Naan Bread

With this in mind, I’m sure that their entire menu is delicious. That I wouldn’t know. But, what I do know is that their Chana Masala is absolutely delicious. It was authentic, fragrant, and everything that I had envisioned.

If you are unfamiliar with Chana Masala. It is an authentic Indian dish made of chickpeas, spices, onions, garlic, and ginger in Sauce. The main ingredient is a variety of chickpea called chana or Kala chana. These chickpeas are half the diameter of typical chickpeas with a stronger flavor and texture even after being cooked. This dish is best enjoyed served hot.

If ordering to go, the Chana Masala comes in a bowl separate from the rice, and the Naan bread is covered in foil.

Additionally, you can choose to enjoy your meal with a side of Basmati rice or Naan. Naan is famous Indian-stye leavened soft bread baked in a tandoor clay oven according to the menu of Kohinoor Indian Restaurant and Lounge. It’s also delicious with yogurt.

Final Thoughts

While there is a full menu of other dishes to try for lunch or dinner, Chana Masala has become my favorite. My hope is to begin working my way through the menu and trying some of the other dishes available.

What is your favorite Indian dish?
