Oklahoma Voting VIPs Score Salary Surge

SB290 increases the pay that election officials will receive and was sent to the Governor's desk on May 26, 2023. If approved, the increased earnings will go into effect July 1, 2024.

Inspectors will receive huge increase in pay

Senate Bill 290 is a law about amending compensation that certain people will be paid for working at elections in Oklahoma. Inspectors, judges and clerks were scheduled to receive increasing amounts depending on the year.

The language of the current law originally stated that from July 1, 2020, to July 1, 2024, Inspectors (those in charge of a voting place) would get $110. From July 1, 2024, to July 1, 2028, they were scheduled to receive $125. And from July 1, 2028, onwards, they were scheduled to receive $150. The updated law (SB290) strikes through the differing amounts and states that Inspectors will receive $225 as of July 1, 2024.

Judges and clerks who help with elections will also get paid different amounts.

Reimbursement for travel is unchanged by SB290. If the precinct officials have to travel more than 10 miles from their home to work at the voting place, they will get reimbursed for the money they spend on gas for their car. The amount they will get depends on the rules for travel reimbursement set by the state government.

Where will the higher compensation money come from?

The money for paying the precinct officials will come from two sources. For certain elections like the primary and general elections, the State Election Board will pay most of the money, and the county election board will pay a small part.

For other elections, the organization conducting the election will pay all of the money. If more than one organization is having an election in the same voting place, they will share the cost of paying the precinct officials.

The secretary of the county election board can also ask people to work as volunteers at the voting place, but volunteers will not get paid. If the governor approves and signs off on SB290, this law is scheduled to be in effect on July 1, 2024.

What do you think of SB290? Is it something that Oklahomans need? Do you think it will improve life for most Oklahomans?
