Wow! Did you know that the First President of the United States, George Washington, and his troops ate American Shad and that American shad is also known as the Founding Fish! Of course, most anglers know that American shad is a super fun fish to catch on light gear. They are also known as the poor man's tarpon. Shad have lots of small bones that are difficult to remove; they are extremely difficult to fillet as well. I learned an easy way to clean and cook shad. This is part 3 of 4.

SACRAMENTO RIVER FISHING | More American SHAD Action at FREEPORT
American Shad are super fun to catch! They are in the Sacramento River! But this does not mean that they are easy to catch. In this episode, I am with Captain Kirk Westervelt of YouTube fame. He was very generous in taking me on his North River 22-foot boat! We fished the outgoing tide between 8 AM until 4 PM. There were more than a hundred fish caught during that time frame. Unfortunately, we were not in that category this time. However, it is a tremendous blessing to be along side someone who enjoys fishing as much as I do. Thank you for coming along on this journey with us. Please do not forget to hit that "Follow" button and that "Like" button. Grateful for your visit.

Every year around late March / early April American shad enter the river systems through Sacramento, CA, on the journey to their spawning grounds. Unlike the salmon, which die after spawning, shad can make their trips back to the ocean around late July / early August to live and return again to repeat the cycle until they are captured and / or died in the process. In this video I am sharing the shad setup that I use for catching shad from a boat in the Sacramento River. This is part 1 of 4.

Encountered with a sea lion & bent hook, this video’s got it all…. Hope you enjoy it! Currently, we don’t have a fish finder on our boat. On this fishing trip with "da Captain," I learned that one of the best indicator of American shad being active is the presence of sea lions. Be careful, you can lose your fish or your rigs if you don't use a rod holder! A sea lion enjoyed my catch and saved me a head for left over. Judging from the head, it was a trophy size shad! This is part 4 of 4.

Arguably, the white sturgeon, North America's largest fish, is on a lot of anglers' bucket list! Rightly so, because it is pretty difficult to catch. In California, in addition to a regular fishing license, a Sturgeon Fishing Report Card is required to fish for sturgeon. For every sturgeon fishing trip, if we had one classic take-down, we considered it a successful trip! On Monday, Feb. 8, 2021, we had one such take-down captured on video; unfortunately, it was on only for a few seconds.
