You Can Get Cream Puffs Unlike Any Other from this Home-Baker in East Village, San Diego

The last year has presented many opportunities for home bakers to perfect their craft, hone their skills and for some, even start a business.

Lots of these bakers have been successful by utilizing social media platforms like Instagram and Yelp. Kathy "Puffs", as she is fondly known as on Instagram, runs her cream puff business, Puffs SD, out of her home in East Village, Downtown San Diego. She makes everything from scratch. Since it's a home business, for now you can only place an order via direct message on Instagram at @puffs_sd or via text at the number found on her instagram page.

Since it's not a brick and mortar establishment, the process is a little different. You can't just stroll in and leave with a dozen cream puffs. Instead, you need to place your order ahead of time and pay a deposit to secure your puffs. Then pickup time and dates are set, and you can get your cream puffs several days to a week later, depending on Kathy's availability. But you will definitely want to order ahead of time because these puffs are very much in demand!

You can find flavors at Puffs SD that you cannot get elsewhere. The flavors rotate and Kathy releases different "editions" every so often. Past flavors include the Cheesecake Edition (featuring key lime pie, salted caramel, berry compote), the Tea Edition (with jasmine milk tea, thai tea, earl grey milk tea), and the Ode to Japan (yuzu passion fruit, matcha strawberry, black sesame with salted caramel). She also sometimes does optional add-ons like boba!

I am a lover of all things tea-flavored, especially pastries, which isn’t all too common in your typical bakery. With one bite, I could see why Kathy's puffs were so in demand. Each one was so delicious, it was hard to choose a favorite. Kathy is such a perfectionist that your cream puffs aren't even piped until right before your pick-up time, so these came out as fresh as possible. Each puff had delectably crispy shells and the cream inside was light, airy and each had the most perfect infusion of tea! She speckled each puff with some gold flakes for that extra bling too!

Her menu rotates but you can always find the current offerings on her instagram page. She's had a couple flavor rotations and always has exciting new flavors in the works!

You can get 6 puffs for $26 or a dozen for $50. They are a sure crowd-pleaser!
