Edward Deresky’s truck stood in Sylvania Heights between Shirley Drive and Marler Street in Okaloosa County, Florida. Inside, the lifeless body of its owner sat in the driver’s seat.
Initially, police thought that 25-year-old Edward had been in a car crash, but doctors soon found a gunshot wound under his arm when he arrived at the hospital.
Now, 26 years after the murder of Edward Deresky, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for assistance in solving the cold case. Police believe that back in 1992, Edward was killed because of a drug deal that had gone wrong.
In 2010, Edward’s sister Debra Delos Santos told the Sun Sentinel that Edward had a severe drug addiction and spent his adult life fighting the habit. However, she also told the paper that no one in the family was contacted when her brother died, and his ashes sat in the morgue for 15 years before they were mailed to Debra.
"I'm devastated," Delos Santos said of learning of her brother's killing years after the fact. "I'm looking for my brother for all these years, thinking maybe he just doesn't want me to find him. Maybe I think he's gonna be all right."
The woman from Delray Beach hadn’t seen her brother in a long time, and she’d spent 18 years trying to locate him.
"For them to know he wasn't a John Doe and for them to know he was shot and murdered and to not contact family, that's not OK with me," she said.
The case has now been reopened, and the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is looking for any information relating to Edward’s death.
