A GoFundMe fundraiser asking for public support for victims of the Monterey Park Lunar New Year shooting in California has raised over a million dollars. The fundraiser was organized by Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California and others. While the fundraiser on GoFundMe will close on February 3rd at 5 PM Pacific Time, members of the public can continue to donate directly through Asian Americans Advancing Justice.

The organizers of the fundraiser state on the main information page: “On January 21, at least 11 individuals were killed and many more seriously injured in a shooting spree that occurred at a dance studio in Monterey Park, just blocks away from a joyous New Year festival where thousands of people gathered. Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific tragedy. 100% of donations received will be directly distributed to individuals who are now suffering from this senseless violence.”

GoFundMe is a platform that allows individuals to donate to people and causes. According to those who organized the fundraiser, the money raised through donations from the public will go to “victims and their families who will directly receive… donations to support hospital bills and more.”

The fundraiser originally sought to raise $200,000 and due to an outpouring of support, collected over five times that amount in a short period of time. Asian Americans Advancing Justice states that their “mission is to advance civil and human rights for Asian Americans and to build and promote a fair and equitable society for all.”
