According to recent news reports, President Biden is expected to announce that he running for re-election in the coming weeks and months. He will deliver the State of the Union Address on Tuesday, February 7th. An official announcement may follow the speech before the United States Congress, the nation, and the world.
A report from The Hill on January 18th, 2023, quotes unnamed sources who say he may reveal his plans after the State of the Union Adress and announce formally in the spring. A different report by CBS News on January 19th, 2023, says a formal announcement could come in the weeks following the speech. So far, only Former President Donald Trump has formally announced his campaign for the White House in the election that will be held in 2024.
President Biden is 80 years old. When the election in 2024 is held, he will be 81 years old. He is expected to run a campaign based on a list of legislative accomplishments from the last two years. Improvements in the economy and low unemployment will likely factor into his re-election strategy.
A long list of republican candidates will likely also announce campaigns for the White House. Former Vice President Mike Pence is often listed as a potential contender. President Biden has indicated that he would likely run for re-election but has been fairly quiet on the matter.
Democratic support will likely coalesce behind President Biden without a serious primary challenge or such contender. In 2022, President Biden’s Democratic Party retained control of the U.S. Senate. The Democratic Party also out performed expectations in elections for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.
