Five ShopRite supermarkets in the Capital Region permanently shuttered this past weekend, considerably earlier than initially announced.
The move had reportedly come as a surprise to company employees and the general public alike, per various online postings, due to the fact the stores were scheduled to remain open until December 9th.
For perspective, according to an archived October 20th report from WinsightGroceryBusiness.com, the then-upcoming closures were reported to be due to underperformance.
As excerpted from the report: “Shop-Rite Supermarkets Inc. (SRS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Wakefern Food Corp., has made the decision to close its ShopRite stores and gas stations in the Capital Region, including the stores located in Albany, Colonie, Niskayuna, Slingerlands and North Greenbush," Keasbey, New Jersey-based Wakefern said in a statement issued by Chief Communications Officer Karen Meleta. "The stores will close on or about Dec. 9."
As to the company's switch of plans to the early closings, let us explore.
According to an November 19th report from CBS6Albany.com, the early ShopRite closures were due largely to lack of inventory.
As excerpted from the report: ShopRite is no more in the Capital Region. Saturday was the last day of business for 5 stores around the area. Originally, the grocery stores were supposed to be open until December 9th. Thursday, the company announced that they were closing Saturday, saying they just don't have the inventory to stay open another few weeks.
"About 500" employees have reportedly been laid off from the stores in Colonie, Slingerlands, Albany, North Greenbush and Niskayuna.
For perpective, per ScrapeHero.com's most recently-updated national ShopRite location count (less the five closures): There are 318 ShopRite stores in the United States as of October 17, 2023. The state with the most number of ShopRite locations in the US is New Jersey, with 181 stores, which is about 57% of all ShopRite stores in the US.
