Introduction

A Brattleboro landmark, open since 1932 and widely known as "The Biggest Little Store in the World," is permanently closing.

Let us explore.

Sam's Outdoor Outfitters, 2023

According to a September 28th report from The-Sun.com, the longstanding Main Street landmark is closing upon expiration of its lease.

As excerpted from the report: Sam's Outdoor Outfitters - a family-owned Brattleboro, Vermont, superstore - said it will shut down on the final day of its lease... The city's former Mayor, Peter Shumlin, said Sam's closure will change the landscape of the local business community. "Losing Sam’s is like New York losing Macy’s," Shumlin said, according to VTDigger.

No specific date of closure has, as yet, been announced. However, per SentinelSource.com, the lease expires next spring: (Brad) Borofksy, grandson of founder Sam Borofsky, said Monday that his family’s longtime Brattleboro business at 74 Main St. will end its lease and pull out of the town by April 30, 2024.

The reason given for the store closing is a gradual decrease in business. The company's other locations in New Hampshire and Massachusetts will remain open.
