According to Wikipedia’s comprehensive and well-attributed overview of the entity, Target Corporation was founded in 1902 under the name Goodfellow Dry Goods, followed until 2000 by various iterations of Dayton corporations until the present parent name. Target, the retailer, was established in 1962 as the discount division of Dayton's department store of Minneapolis.

Per’s current location count of company stores: There are 1,954 Target stores in the United States as of May 22, 2023. The state with the most number of Target locations in the US is California, with 317 stores, which is about 16% of all Target stores in the US.

Now comes word that a new Target is opening in the state of West Virginia, despite four recently announced upcoming store closures.

According to a report from, entitled “New Target Store Opening in Putnam County Tentatively Planned For This Fall, October is the new entity’s tentatively scheduled opening month.

As excerpted from the report: A new Target store in Putnam County could open this fall, officials said. The new store at Liberty Square in Teays Valley is tentatively scheduled to open sometime in October, project officials said Monday. The opening is not set in stone and could be delayed due to construction.
