Introduction
I write extensively about the Walmart superchain for NewsBreak. Of late, most of my articles have detailed a spate of recently-announced store closures.
This article will list those stores, and associated locations, in full.
Firstly, per ScrapeHero.com, the most recently updated U.S. location count offers perspective as to the recent news: There are 4,648 Walmart locations in the United States as of February 07, 2023. The state with the most number of Walmart locations in the U.S. is Texas, with 516 locations, which is about 11% of all Walmart locations in the U.S.
Let us explore further.
Walmart, 2023
According to a March 24th report from BusinessInsider.com, entitled “Walmart is Closing a Batch of Stores in 2023 — Here's the Full List,” two non-store pick-up and delivery locations can be added atop the list of 15 retail closures and recent downsizing of e-Commerce operations.
As excerpted from the report: The recent closures follow a trend of Walmart closing a handful of stores across various states each year, with the company saying that the stores are "underperforming" without providing specifics. In addition, the retail giant is ending its nine-year experiment with two pick-up only locations in Illinois and Arkansas, and confirmed it would lay off hundreds of workers at five ecommerce fulfillment centers across the US.
The specific list of closing locations follows, per the BusinessInsider.com report.
Arkansas:
3701 SE Dodson Road, Bentonville (Pick-up only concept)
DC:
99 H Street NW, Washington
Georgia:
- 1801 Howell Mill Rd NW, Atlanta
- 835 M.L.K. Jr Dr NW, Atlanta
Florida:
- 6900 US Highway 19 North, Pinellas Park (Neighborhood Market concept)
Hawaii:
- 1032 Fort Street Mall, Honolulu
Illinois:
- 17550 South Halsted St, Homewood
- 12690 S. Route 59, Plainfield
- 840 N. McCormick Blvd, Lincolnwood (Pick-up only concept)
Indiana:
- 3701 Portage Road, South Bend
Minnesota:
- 1200 Shingle Creek Pkwy, Brooklyn Center
New Mexico:
- 301 San Mateo Blvd. SE, Albuquerque
Oregon:
- 4200 82nd Ave. SE, Portland
- 1123 N Hayden Meadows Dr., Portland
Texas:
- 24919 Westheimer Pkwy, Katy (Neighborhood Market concept)
Washington:
- 11400 Hwy. 99, Everett
Wisconsin:
- 10330 W. Silver Spring Dr, Milwaukee
Though the closures of all locations listed are officially blamed on performance, in the events of the Oregon and Washington locations specifically numerous incidents of in-store crime have been reported and factored by locals.
As far as still-to-be-announced closings in other U.S. locations, any listing in that regard is speculative though more closings are widely expected by industry analysts.
Conclusion
The ongoing permanent closings of U.S. Walmart locations is a developing story. In the event of pertinent updates to this matter, inclusive of further closures and official announcements of milestone dates, I will share them here on NewsBreak.
