Introduction

I write extensively about the Walmart superchain for NewsBreak. Of late, most of my articles have a detailed a spate of recent store closures.

Now comes word that yet another location is permanently closing, marking the company’s 13th announced major U.S. store closure in recent weeks, not counting pick-up and delivery centers.

Within that figure are locations in Minnesota and Indiana, both also announced this week as permanently shuttering.

Let us explore further.

Walmart, 2023

According to a March 21st report from Hawaii’s KHON.com, entitled “Oahu to Lose One Walmart Location,” performance-related issues yet again are blamed for the upcoming closure.

As excerpted from the article: A Walmart on Oahu will be closing its doors for good. According to the communications director for Walmart in the Western United States, a decision was made to close the Downtown Honolulu Walmart location at 1032 Fort St. Mall.

The store will close April 21. Per StarAdvertiser.com, Walmart operates 10 locations across the islands, inclusive of Sam’s Club stores.

The Walmart corporate office offered the usual statement, as included in the KHON.com report: “We have nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S. and unfortunately some do not meet our financial expectations. While our underlying business is strong, these specific stores haven’t performed as well as we hoped. There is no single cause for why a store closes and our decision is based on several factors, including historic and current financial performance, and is in line with the threshold that guides our strategy to close underperforming locations.

Conclusion

The national closures of Walmart locations is a developing story. In the event of pertinent updates to this matter, inclusive of progress and official announcements of milestone dates, I will share them here on NewsBreak.

Thank you for reading.
