Introduction

I write extensively about the state of U.S. shopping malls for NewsBreak. In recent months, most of my articles have detailed longstanding mall closures or sales.

This present piece is particularly relevant as it will discuss two such closings – in the states of Maryland and New York.

Let us explore further.

U.S. Shopping Malls, 2023

According to a March 20th article from RockvilleNights.com, entitled “The Final Days of Lakeforest Mall, Closing March 31, 2023,” early planning for redevelopment of the Maryland entity is proving concerning to some analysts.

As excerpted from the article: The end is nigh for Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg. Opened as a grand shopping and entertainment destination with distinctive architecture on September 12, 1978, the mall was hugely popular through the end of the 1990s… The mall will close March 31, 2023, and will be demolished in 2024. It will be replaced with a massive housing development that will bring thousands of new residents to a property that has no rapid transit station, and no new highways planned….

Macy’s was the last anchor store to shutter.

Per a March 8th report from LoHud.com, “Inside the Last Days of the Galleria: Stacks of Mannequins and Empty Storefronts,” redevelopment end goals of this White Plains, New York location are similar to those of Lakeforest.

From the report: The 43-year-old Galleria mall is in its final days. Its last day of business will be March 23, and all doors will be permanently closed on March 31. As of March 3, only eight storefronts and three food vendors were still open… The plan is to transform the 870,000-square-foot mall into a mixed-use commercial and residential site.

Conclusion

These are developing stories. In the event of pertinent updates to this matter, inclusive of redevelopment progress and official announcements of milestone dates, I will share them here on NewsBreak.

Thank you for reading.
