Introduction

I write extensively about the state of U.S. shopping malls for NewsBreak. My March 14th article, “U.S. Shopping Mall Temporarily Closed as Roof Collapses,” is particularly pertinent to this current piece due to its focus on the entity we will discuss herein.

My article excerpted a report from DuluthNewsTribune.com, entitled “Miller Hill Mall Evacuated After Roof Collapse,” that addressed the cause of the titular collapse as snow-related.

As excerpted from the report: The Miller Hill mall was evacuated Tuesday morning after a roof collapse. No injuries were immediately reported. According to the Duluth fire department, the collapse was reported at 9 a.m. near Applebee’s… Kelli Latuska, public information officer for the city of Duluth, said water and gas were turned off and everyone was accounted for. The public is asked to stay away from the mall area.

Reportedly snow weighed down the roof area, and the ensuing smell of gas was far-reaching and lingering.

Now comes word that Duluth, Minnesota’s primary mall, which many customers expected to reopen this week per social media chatter, is shuttered indefinitely based on a continuance of safety measures.

Let us explore further.

U.S. Shopping Malls, 2023

According to a report from BringMeTheNews.com, entitled “Duluth's Miller Hill Mall Closed 'Until Further Notice' After Roof Collapse,” mall ownership had not yet publicly released a reopening date but appears to be planning a reopening in phases.

As excerpted from the report: Simon Properties, who owns the mall, issued the following statement to Bring Me The News on Thursday: "We are grateful there were no injuries as result of a portion of the roof collapsing and for the swift actions of the first responders. Miller Hill Mall will be closed through at least Thursday, March 16, but we are diligently working on a phased opening plan. We will share an update on our website when the property is reopened."

As of press time, the mall has yet to begin the reopening process.

Conclusion

This is a developing story. In the event of pertinent updates to this matter, inclusive of progress and official announcements of milestone dates, I will share them here on NewsBreak.

Thank you for reading.
