Introduction

I write extensively about the Target chain for NewsBreak. My March 14th article, “Two Longstanding Target Stores Permanently Closing May 13,” is particularly relevant to this current piece due to detailing recent reportage regarding upcoming store closures in Minneapolis and Philadelphia.

It should be noted both entities are smaller locations which reportedly employ 45 people. Redditors and Facebook posters have largely excoriated the closings.

Per ScrapeHero.com: There are 1,948 Target retail stores in the United States as of February 20, 2023. The state with the most number of Target locations in the U.S. is California, with 314 retail stores, which is about 16% of all Target retail stores in the U.S.

Now comes word that two more Target locations are permanently shuttering. The development appears to be unexpected to many, also based on report comments and posted social media reaction.

Let us explore further.

Target, 2023

According to a report from BusinessInsider.com, entitled “Target is Closing 4 locations in Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and the DC area – Here's the Full List,” the stores are all closing due to performance-based issues.

As excerpted from the report: Target will close four locations in three metro areas: two near DC, one in Philadelphia, and one in its hometown of Minneapolis. The company cited declining foot traffic as its primary reason for the closures and said most store employees would be offered positions at other locations.

All four entities are smaller-format locations. It should be further noted official word from the company states no further closures are planned for 2023.

The four closing locations are the following:

  • Maryland: 7501 Baltimore Ave, College Park
  • Minnesota: 1300 W Lake St., Minneapolis
  • Pennsylvania: 1128 Chestnut St., Philadelphia
  • Virginia: 500 S Washington St, Falls Church

Conclusion

The upcoming spate of Target store closings is a developing story. In the event of pertinent updates to this matter, inclusive of further related announcements, I will share them here on NewsBreak.

Thank you for reading.
