Introduction

I have written extensively about the Walmart-owned Sam’s Club warehouse chain for NewsBreak. While most of these articles have discussed issues related to individual store closures, on an infrequent basis they have also detailed other business matters.

Today, as if to underscore the latter circumstance, has come word of a rapid national expansion of Sam’s Club locations.

Per ScrapeHero.com’s current store count: There are 600 Sams Club retail stores in the United States as of January 16, 2023. The state with the most number of Sams Club locations in the U.S. is Texas, with 82 retail stores, which is about 14% of all Sams Club retail stores in the U.S.

That number will soon substantially increase.

Let us explore further.

Sam’s Club, 2023

According to a January 26th report from CNBC.com, entitled “Walmart-Owned Sam’s Club Plans to Open About 30 New Stores Over Next Five Years,” the expansion has been long in the planning.

As excerpted from the report: Walmart-owned Sam’s Club on Thursday said it will open more than 30 new stores in the U.S., marking its most aggressive expansion in years... Sam’s Club also plans to open five fulfillment and distribution centers this year, with the first of those opening in Georgia. CEO Kath McLay said the retailer wants to reach more customers, after sharp gains in sales and an all-time high in membership at its current clubs. It plans to build about 30 clubs over the next five years and likely more in the two years after, she said.

The first of the new stores is scheduled to open in 2024, in Florida.

The report goes on to state: Yet it hasn’t opened a new club in years. It shuttered 63 clubs around the country in 2018, converting a small number of those clubs into e-commerce fulfillment centers. Its last major expansion was in the 2010s, when it opened five to 10 clubs per year on average. Its most recent new club opened in 2017 in Hanover, Pennsylvania.

Recent, better-than-expected earnings reports led to the ambitious decision.

Conclusion

This is a developing story. In the event of further updates to this matter, I will share them here on NewsBreak.
